If you told me a few years back
that I'd be able to buy a real (non-department store, that is)
dual suspension mountain bike for less than half a grand, I
would have chuckled. I sell cross-country skis that cost
nearly that, and they don't have any moving parts at all!
The Discovery 2 slips under the wire by using the Discovery
3's main triangle of 7005 aluminum mated to a cro-moly steel
rear triangle that's plenty stiff, although slightly heavier
than its aluminum counterpart. Front bumps are tamed with 65mm
of SunTour XCE fork travel. And you can still look forward,
even at this price, to 3.3" of rear axle travel suspended
by a coil spring shock. Eight speed shifting has also trickled
down to this price range so you'll never feel like the gear
you want is the nonexistent one between the two you have.
I see you riding the Discovery 2 on the carriage paths of Bar
Harbor, Maine. Or along the beach bike path in Costa Mesa, CA.
Or maybe you've been wondering where that unpaved rail trail
near your house leads. You don't need an endless backcountry
to have a mountain bike adventure. You just need a bike. And
nobody's deducting points for going in comfort and style. So
have at it.
